When the Attempt to Hide an Odor Became an Entirely New Odor Problem
Sometimes the most difficult odor problem in a home isn’t the odor that started the story.
It’s what someone did trying to get rid of it.
Recently, Master Odor Removal was called to investigate a mystery odor in a Boca Raton home. The homeowner knew something wasn’t right. There was a strong, unusual smell inside the residence, but its origin wasn’t obvious.
Cleaning hadn’t solved it.
Air fresheners weren’t going to solve it.
And simply ventilating the house wasn’t getting to the bottom of it.
So we approached the situation the way we approach any mystery odor:
Don’t guess. Find the source.
The Search for the Mystery Odor
Odors can travel.
That’s one of the reasons homeowners sometimes have difficulty determining where a smell actually originates.
An odor noticed in a hallway may originate somewhere else. An odor coming through an air-conditioning vent may have started in another part of the structure. Materials can also absorb odors and later release them back into the indoor environment.
In South Florida, the challenge can become even more noticeable because homes operate in a warm, humid climate. As one example of the conditions Boca Raton routinely experiences, National Weather Service data for the area shows periods of relative humidity well above 80%.
Therefore, finding the actual source matters.
As we investigated this Boca Raton home, the trail eventually led us somewhere the homeowner probably wasn’t expecting:
The attic.
And there we found the surprise.
Someone Had Thrown Mothballs Throughout the Attic
At some point, a handyman had apparently encountered an odor problem and tried to address it by throwing mothballs into the attic.
Presumably, the idea was simple:
If the house smells bad, put something stronger up there to overpower the smell.
Unfortunately, that’s not odor removal.
Now the home didn’t merely have the original odor concern.
It had a mothball odor problem, too.
And mothballs aren’t simply another household fragrance.
According to the University of Florida IFAS Extension, mothballs are actually registered pesticides that commonly contain either naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene. They work through sublimation—the solid material gradually changes into a gas.
That distinction is important.
Mothballs Aren’t an Odor-Removal Treatment
Mothballs have a specific purpose.
They are designed to control moths and certain other pests when used according to their product labeling. They are not a professional whole-home odor-neutralization system.
EPA-approved labeling for one paradichlorobenzene mothball product, for example, specifies use in clean, airtight containers such as chests, trunks and garment bags. The label also warns against using containers that allow vapors to escape into occupied rooms.
The EPA also advises keeping exposure to moth repellents to a minimum and notes that products containing paradichlorobenzene carry warnings about breathing their vapors.
In other words:
Throwing mothballs around an attic to combat a mystery smell isn’t the same thing as eliminating the source of that smell.
It can simply introduce another powerful odor into the structure.
Covering an Odor Is Not Neutralizing an Odor
This Boca Raton case illustrates one of the biggest misconceptions we encounter in professional odor removal.
People naturally assume:
Bad smell + stronger smell = problem solved.
That’s why homeowners sometimes reach for fragrance sprays, plug-ins, scented disinfectants, odor bombs and other products.
But there is an important difference between changing what you smell and eliminating why you smell it.
If the original odor source remains, masking it doesn’t necessarily make the underlying problem disappear.
In this case, the attempt to solve an odor problem created another unmistakable odor that had to be identified.
That’s precisely why Master Odor Removal focuses on source-focused odor neutralization rather than fragrance masking.
The Attic Was the Clue
Once the mothballs were discovered, the “mystery” suddenly wasn’t quite so mysterious.
This is also an excellent example of why homeowners shouldn’t assume that an unusual odor automatically means mold, mildew, sewage, an HVAC problem or another common culprit.
Sometimes the answer is much less obvious.
Someone may have treated the property previously.
A previous homeowner may have used a chemical.
A contractor may have attempted an odor solution.
Something may have been placed inside an attic, closet, cabinet, crawlspace or other hidden area.
That’s why odor investigation requires more than walking into a house and saying, “Yes, it smells.”
The question is:
Why does it smell?
Boca Raton Homes Present Unique Odor Challenges
Professional home odor removal is especially relevant in Boca Raton and throughout South Florida.
Homes and condominiums here operate in an environment where heat, humidity and air conditioning are part of everyday life. Closed-up seasonal residences can also sit for extended periods with limited fresh-air exchange.
Then there are renovations, previous occupants, pets, cooking, cigarette or cigar smoke and products introduced in previous attempts to correct an odor.
Consequently, what initially sounds like a straightforward odor complaint can become an investigation.
And that’s where experience matters.
Our Rule Is Simple: Don’t Add Another Smell
At Master Odor Removal, our objective isn’t to make your home smell like perfume, citrus, flowers or chemicals.
Our goal is neutral.
We don’t believe a homeowner should walk into a professionally treated property and immediately smell the treatment.
They should walk inside and notice something much simpler:
The objectionable odor is gone.
That’s the philosophy behind:
Neutral is the New Scent Standard!™
Professional odor removal should address the odor problem rather than begin a competition between the original odor and whatever product someone sprays, fogs or throws into the building.
Before You Throw Something in the Attic…
If you’re experiencing an unexplained odor in your Boca Raton home, resist the temptation to start adding products simply because they have a strong smell.
Instead, start with the most important question:
Where is the odor actually coming from?
The answer could save considerable time, frustration and money.
And sometimes—as this particular Boca Raton Mystery Odor Case File demonstrated—the thing somebody previously used to “fix” the odor can turn out to be a major part of the mystery itself.
Mothballs belong where their product label says they belong.
Professional odor problems deserve professional odor investigation.
And sometimes solving the mystery begins by looking in the last place anyone thought to check.
The attic.
